A 307-digit prime number was factored by a team of researchers using powerful computers; they speculate that 1024-bit encryption might be vulnerable in the ‘near future’.

This comes close on the heels of a Chinese research unit’s announcement of efficient collision detection in SHA-1 encryption, a widely used method that the U.S. government has announced it will now phase out.
